Identifying a Leading Predictor of Arctic Stratospheric Ozone for April Precipitation in Eastern North America

چکیده
An analysis of the relationship between changes in Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO) and precipitation eastern North America (38°–54°N, 65°–87°W; PENA) was performed using observational reanalysis data coupled with Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4). We found that March ASO exhibits a strong correlation PENA April, indicating one-month leading exerts potentially impact on April PENA. Changes tropospheric circulation over Pacific can be influenced by anomalies via stratosphere–troposphere interactions. Increased typically results transport drier, colder air from northwest to suppresses local convective activity enhancing regional downwelling. These conditions lead decrease atmospheric water vapor content (1000–600 hPa). Abnormally high may therefore suppress precipitation, whereas abnormally low serves enhance finding is supported WACCM4 simulations incorporating these anomaly signals. also present an ASO-based statistical linear model for predicting Results confirm reproduces both training testing periods, based ASO, demonstrating reliability stability this model. This study verifies viable predictor projecting thus improving forecasts seasonal precipitation.

The surface impacts of Arctic stratospheric ozone anomalies
In the Arctic stratosphere, total column ozone in the spring can vary, from year to year, by as much as 30%. This large interannual variability, however, is absent from many presentgeneration climate models, in which the prescribed seasonal cycle of stratospheric ozone includes, at best, smooth multi-decadal trends. We here investigate the extent to which interannual variability in Arctic strat...
متن کاملContrasting fast precipitation responses to tropospheric and stratospheric ozone forcing
The precipitation response to radiative forcing (RF) can be decomposed into a fast precipitation response (FPR), which depends on the atmospheric component of RF, and a slow response, which depends on surface temperature change. We present the first detailed climate model study of the FPR due to tropospheric and stratospheric ozone changes. The FPR depends strongly on the altitude of ozone chan...
متن کاملComparative phylogeography of unglaciated eastern North America.
Regional phylogeographical studies involving co-distributed animal and plant species have been conducted for several areas, most notably for Europe and the Pacific Northwest of North America. Until recently, phylogeographical studies in unglaciated eastern North America have been largely limited to animals. As more studies emerge for diverse lineages (including plants), it seems timely to asses...

In order to study climate at scales where policy decisions can be made, regional climate models (RCMs) have been developed with much finer resolution (∼50 km) than the ∼500 km resolution of atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (AOGCMs). The North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP) is an international program that provides 50-km resolution climate output for the...
